Ferrous alloys are iron containing compounds, having a valance of +2 . The most common type of ferrous alloy is steel with carbon contents of between 0 and 2 weight percentage. Other alloying elements lead to the forming of carbides, which improve the material properties as hardness, tensile strength and hardenability. Mild steel, stainless steel, cast iron and wrought iron are other well-known ferrous metals, mainly praised for their tensile strength and durability. Ferrous alloys are also the most recycled materials in the word.
- The heavy melting scrap of used steel and wrought iron fall into two main categories of HMS1 and HMS2 for sorting, recycling, selling and processing purposes. Scrap of this nature comes from dismantled or demolished structures or items and should never be disposed of in landfills since it can be reprocessed into new, usable products. Today, recyclers will buy this scrap to help keep it from just being thrown away where it can no longer be of use to anyone.
HMS1 and HMS2 Both Have Subcategories
- The primary difference between HMS1 and HMS2 is the fact that the first one does not contain galvanised or blackened steel, whereas, the second one does include both of them. According to the Institute of Scrap Recycling Industries or the ISRI the subcategories of HMS1 and HMS2 are as follows:
- ISRI 200 HMS1 includes steel and wrought iron scrap that is one-quarter inch or thicker. All the pieces of this need to be less than 60 inches by 24 inches.
- ISRI 201 HMS1 is the same as ISRI 200 except the pieces need to be smaller than 60 inches by 18 inches.
- ISRI 202 HMS1 only differs from ISRI 200 in that the pieces need to measure less that 60 inches by 18 inches.
- ISRI 203 HMS2 includes wrought iron and steel scrap that is galvanised or black that has a thickness of one-eighth inch or more.
- ISRI 204 HMS2 only differs from ISRI 203 in that the pieces cannot be larger than 36 inches by 18 inches.
- ISRI 205 HMS2 is the same as ISRI 204 but can include thin-gauge automotive scrap.
- ISRI 206 HMS2 is the same as ISRI 205 except that it cannot contain pieces larger than 60 inches and 18 inches.
- Recycling is the process of turning old used materials into new ones. Through recycling and reusing waste, energy and raw materials are saved.
- With the continuously increasing population and use of disposable products and packaging, our finite natural resources are being depleted at an alarming rate.
- Currently less that 25% of our waste is being recycled, with the remaining being buried or incinerated in landfills. This seems absurd when we could be reusing and/or recycling more than 70% of the waste we produce.
